If you want to move to Costa Rica, it is advisable not to take too much of your existing household contents with you! Quite high transport costs, import duties (yes, they also apply to used household items) and an organizational effort that is often far underestimated could give you some unpleasant experiences when starting anew in Costa Rica. So here's some advice: travel light, you'll get everything you need here!
Animals
If you want to take pets with you, this is generally not a problem. Dogs and cats need a certified health certificate that proves that your pet does not have any diseases or parasites. You also need an international vaccination certificate with, among other things, the entry of a valid rabies vaccination. If your pet is transported as cargo, you must present an import permit from “Salud Publica Veterinaria” (located in San José). In any case, please clarify the regulations again beforehand, as they are subject to constant change!
Please inform the airline if you are taking an animal with you and ensure that you have a suitable cage that meets the airline's regulations. Small pooches (under 10 pounds) typically travel as carry-on luggage.
It should also be noted that some airlines do not transport pets at certain times of the year! So clarify exactly when you are flying and what difficulties or regulations you can expect. Unless you have booked a direct flight, please also note that not all hotels allow you to bring pets. Please check with the respective airline shortly before departure to ensure that the animal will be transported despite bad weather conditions. Airlines may refuse to allow pets during severe turbulence.
Tip: Some airlines refuse to take so-called fighting dog breeds (Doberman, Rottweiler, Pit Bull) with them. For exotic animals you need a special permit from the “Ministerio de Ambiente Natural de Costa Rica” (MINAE).
