In the small town of Puerto Viejo / Playa Cocles, with its Caribbean flair, a large portion of the population speaks Creole English. Most of the village's indigenous people are black and came to Costa Rica via Jamaica to work on the railway line or on banana plantations. Sun, beach, and reggae – in Cahuita, you can immerse yourself in the Caribbean way of life. The culture of the predominantly Black population shapes the landscape of the country's Caribbean coast. During the day, you can stroll under palm trees on the white sandy beach in the national park, swim in the pleasantly warm sea, or snorkel in Costa Rica's largest living coral reef. There are also numerous excursions into the surrounding tropical lowland rainforest. A visit to the Gandoca-Manzanillo nature reserve is particularly recommended. In the evening, the nightlife awaits you in Puerto Viejo or nearby Cahuita. Sample the excellent Creole cuisine and let yourself be enchanted by the rhythm.
