General description:
The finca is located in the north of Costa Rica, in the canton of Sarapiqui, in the Caribbean hinterland, near the border with Nicaragua. The area is part of the San Juan - La Selva biological corridor. The immediate region has a wide variety of habitats such as lagoons, streams, marshlands, pastures, bushland, secondary and primary forest, which allows for a very high level of biodiversity. Around 420 species of birds, over 1000 species of butterflies, 25 species of lizards, 44 species of frogs and toads, 56 species of snakes and 114 mammals (including many bats) have been recorded here.
In the finca you will most often encounter howler monkeys, poison dart frogs, green iguanas, caimans, tropical giant ants, tapirs, agoutis, hummingbirds, toucans and parrots.
Both the vanilla plantation and the hotel complex are maintained like a park. Below a small waterfall, a natural pool between rocks invites you to swim all year round. The property can be reached by car all year round (even in the rainy season), is connected to the public power grid and has telephone and internet reception. Vanilla Jungle Lodge is located in the province of Heredia / Canton of Sarapiqui (near La Virgen). In about 5 minutes on foot you can reach the small town of "California Tico". From here, buses leave three times a day in the direction of San Jose. It takes about 2.5 hours by car to get to the airport or the capital.
Boats leave from the neighboring town of Puerto Viejo and take you along the Rio Sarapiqui and the Rio San Juan to the Caribbean beaches of Tortuguero. Various operators also offer rafting or mountain bike tours here. Banana, pineapple and pepper plantations in the immediate vicinity can be visited and at weekly auctions you can experience how cattle are traded in Costa Rica. The Sarapiqui region offers a truly authentic travel experience.
